Gili Meno is a small island with high ecological value. Its coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and coastal ecosystems support marine biodiversity while also sustaining local livelihoods through tourism and fisheries. Protecting these environments requires active participation, which is why Trash Hero plays an important role on Gili Meno.
Trash Hero is an international environmental movement focused on reducing waste through community action, education, and long-term behavioural change. While cleanups are a visible part of our work, the broader goal is to address the root causes of pollution by raising awareness and encouraging responsible waste management practices.
On Gili Meno, our activities bring together local residents, businesses, volunteers, and visitors to collectively address waste issues affecting the island.
Small island environments face distinct waste management challenges. Limited land area restricts disposal options, and infrastructure for recycling and waste processing is often minimal. In addition, ocean currents transport debris from distant locations, meaning that a significant portion of waste found on Gili Meno does not originate locally.
Common items collected during cleanups include plastic packaging, bottles, fishing gear, flip-flops, diapers and microplastics. These materials persist in the environment for long periods of time and are particularly harmful in marine ecosystems.
Marine debris poses serious risks to coastal and marine habitats. Plastics can physically damage coral reefs, block sunlight, and introduce toxins as they degrade. Marine animals may ingest plastic or become entangled, leading to injury or death. Seagrass beds, which serve as critical nursery habitats, are especially vulnerable to accumulating debris.
As Gili Meno’s reefs and seagrass systems are located close to shore, waste on beaches can quickly re-enter the marine environment if not removed.
Scientific research shows that most marine pollution originates on land. Regular beach and coastal cleanups help prevent waste from entering the ocean, reducing long-term environmental damage. Our activities on Gili Meno therefore serve as a preventative measure, complementing conservation efforts underwater.
Cleanups also provide valuable data on waste types and sources, helping communities better understand consumption patterns and identify opportunities for waste reduction.

Trash Hero initiatives on Gili Meno aim to promote environmental responsibility through practical action and education. These activities support:
By engaging both residents and visitors, we help to foster a shared understanding that environmental protection is a collective responsibility.
Education is central to the Trash Hero approach. Cleanups encourage participants to reflect on their own consumption habits and explore alternatives to single-use plastics. Involving children and young adults is particularly important, as early exposure to environmental stewardship supports long-term behavioural change.
On Gili Meno we demonstrate how local action can address global environmental challenges. We do this through education, community involvement, and consistent cleanup efforts. All of this work contributes to the protection of fragile island ecosystems.
Every cleanup reduces environmental risk and reinforces the importance of responsible waste management – ensuring that Gili Meno’s natural environments can be sustained for future generations.
